Favorites from this quarter! In no particular order, Beneath a Scarlet Sky, 81 Days Below Zero, The Tattooist of Auschwitz, Three Things About Elsie, Code Girls & Manhattan Beach.

Beneath a Scarlet Sky: If you read only ONE book from this list…read THIS one!! I literally could NOT put it down (I read it on the plane and couldn’t even get out of my seat because I HAD to finish it. It’s a true story about an Italian teenager during WWII who helped smuggle Jews over the Alps as a spy. It’s full of heartbreak, daring, and will take your breath away. You won’t be able to put it down or stop thinking about it the you’re done!!

81 Days Below Zero: Also a true story about a WWII pilot who crash landed in the wilds of Alaska and SURVIVED in the middle of winter as he struggled to get back to his base. It’s a super quick read and you won’t be able to put this one down either!!

The Tattooist of Auschwitz: Another one I couldn’t put down!! I absolutely loved this book & it was highly recommended by multiple people. It’s a mostly true story about the tattooist of Auschwitz (duh), who is forced to tattoo all the incoming prisoners numbers – he falls in love with a prisoner and tries to keep her alive during the war. SO. GOOD.

Three Things About Elsie: This was a particular favorite!! It reminded me so much of the book My Grandmother Asked Me To Tell You She’s Sorry – I read this last quarter and it was one of my favorites. It’s quirky and sweet and sad, and the last few pages have a twist that you won’t see coming.

Code Girls: Another non-fiction book about WWII (do I have a type or what?). There were a few slow parts but WOAH this was a good one – written about the American women in the Army & Navy who broke codes during the war. It follows a handful of them throughout their time serving and is a fascinating glimpse into a world that they were told to keep secret.

Manhattan Beach: Oh I loved this one (also another WWII era book)!! It’s about a girl in Brooklyn who becomes the first female diver – enlisted to fix the American war ships. This was a surprising book – it definitely had some twists that I wasn’t expecting!!

There were a couple of books that were super popular over the last year that I wasn’t a fan of (which surprised me)! Not to say that they weren’t good books, but I didn’t think that they deserved the hype that they received. Oh well, to each their own!!

I’m working a few new books but I’m starting to run low on my list!! Send me your recommendations!!!
