On Sundays, we brunch. My adopted grandmother, my aunt, myself & before he passed – my grandfather. Grandma regales us with stories of growing up the youngest of 8 in rural Northern California & her stint in the Navy when she was stationed on an island in the Detroit River. She still quilts (at 95!) & has sewed some of the most gorgeous pieces of clothing I’ve ever seen! One morning, she told me about her “traveling skirt” that she sewed in the 1930’s & wore every time she went on a trip. As she was describing it, I was visualizing it in my mind with some pieces I already had in my closet & just like that, I knew I had to shoot it!! She was surprised when I asked to borrow it & told her why I wanted it, but she loaned it to me! Janey & I picked what was apparently the coldest day in November to shoot, but the photos came out just beautifully. Grandma was thrilled with how the photos came out – and really, isn’t that all that matters?
All photos were shot on a Contax 645 on Fuji 400h & Ilford HP5+ & processed by The FIND Lab.
