Why Should You Have an Engagement Session?

One of the number-one questions I get from potential couples is, “Do we really need an engagement session?” And honestly? I love this question—because the answer is almost always yes.

There are so many reasons why you should have an engagement session, and each one helps make your wedding day smoother, your photos better, and the whole experience more meaningful. Engagement sessions aren’t just “extra pictures.” They’re a chance to connect, practice, celebrate, and document one of the shortest and sweetest seasons of your life.

Let’s dive into why they’re genuinely worth it

Engagement Sessions Help You Feel Comfortable in Front of the Camera

Most couples haven’t been professionally photographed together before, and that’s totally normal. An engagement session helps you shake off the nerves, figure out how you naturally interact on camera, and get comfortable being your beautiful, slightly awkward, totally normal selves.

By the time the wedding day rolls around, you’ll feel like pros instead of wondering what to do with your hands.

We Get to Know Each Other Before the Wedding

Think of your engagement session as a warm-up for the big day. We get to interact, talk, laugh, and figure out how you move together.

This is one of the biggest reasons you should have an engagement session: connection. When you’re relaxed with me, your wedding day portraits feel so much more effortless and genuine.

You’re Only Engaged Once — Document It!

This is such a fun, exciting, electric time in your life, and it goes by FAST.
(Like… “blink and suddenly you’re at your rehearsal dinner” fast.)

Engagement photos let you freeze what this moment feels like:

  • the anticipation

  • the planning

  • the excitement

  • the dreaming about your future together

I look at our own engagement photos constantly. Even though wedding planning nearly broke me (IYKYK), the feeling of being engaged is something I never want to forget. And that’s exactly what your photos do—they bring you right back to this wild, joyful season.

You’ll Be More Confident on Your Wedding Day

Another huge reason why you should have an engagement session?
You learn how posing works before the wedding day.

This means:

  • you won’t feel stiff or confused

  • you’ll fall right into your natural rhythm

  • you’ll trust the process

  • your portrait time will go faster

So if your wedding timeline gets a little tight (because it always does), you’ll still be able to nail your portraits quickly and beautifully.

It’s Nice to Have Photos in “Real Life” Clothing

Wedding portraits are stunning—but they’re also formal. It’s equally important to have photos of the two of you in your everyday style.

Jeans, sundresses, sweaters, boots… whatever feels like you. Your engagement session gives you photos that feel authentic, natural, and perfect for your home, your walls, your save-the-dates, and your wedding website.

You’ll Love Looking Back on These Photos Years from Now

Sure, you’re taking engagement photos for your save-the-dates and your website… but honestly? You’re taking them for Future You.

One day, when your kids ask about the photos of you running up a mountain or splashing each other in a lake, you’ll get to say, “This is what life felt like when we were just starting our story.”

These are the images that become part of your legacy—not because they’re posed, but because they capture who you were in this moment.

Still Wondering Why You Should Have an Engagement Session?

I get it—every couple feels a little unsure at first. But I promise, it’s one of the best things you can do to feel comfortable, confident, and connected heading into your wedding day. It’s also such a beautiful way to begin telling your story. Let’s chat and see if it’s the right fit for you!
