10 Expert Tips to Help You Prepare for Your Engagement Session

It’s always a little intimidating to have your photos taken—whether it’s a professional shoot or a casual iPhone photo sesh. Don’t worry, I’ve got you covered!

If you’re wondering how to prepare for your engagement session, these tried-and-true tips will help you feel confident, look amazing, and actually have fun. (And if you need outfit inspo, check out this post and this one.)

Empty Your Pockets Before Your Engagement Session

This one’s especially for the guys—phones, keys, and wallets can be super noticeable in photos. Keep those pockets clear so all the focus is on you two, not your car keys. I’ll always double-check before we start, just in case!

Clean Your Ring Before Your Engagement Session

You’ll want that sparkle to shine! I always photograph a few close-ups of your ring, so make sure it’s clean and free of dirt, lotion, or dog hair. You can take it to your jeweler or give it a quick DIY clean with warm water, Dawn dish soap, and a soft toothbrush.

Bring a Second Pair of Shoes

Comfort is key when you prepare for your engagement session—especially if we’ll be walking between multiple photo spots. Bring a comfy backup pair of shoes so you can explore without blisters or wobbling (these also come in very handy if needed).

Be Ready to Change Outfits on the Go

Sometimes there isn’t a nearby restroom or changing room, so the backseat becomes your best friend. A little pre-planning (and a blanket or towel for privacy) makes it easy to switch outfits anywhere.

Show Your Partner a Few Past Engagement Sessions

If your partner’s feeling nervous, have them scroll through a few of my blog posts with real couples! It helps them understand what to expect and eases those “what do I do with my hands?” jitters.

Bring Touch-Up Essentials

If your hair doesn’t love humidity, pack a mini emergency kit—brush, hairspray, and maybe a few bobby pins. A quick touch-up mid-session can save the day!

Decide the Tone of Your Engagement Session Before Choosing Outfits

Before you dive into your closet, think about what you want the vibe of your photos to be. Trendy? Timeless? Bright and coastal? Once you know the tone, choosing colors and outfits becomes so much easier. (Need help with color palettes? Head here.

Dress for the Weather and the Location

New England weather can be unpredictable, so preparing for your engagement session means planning for comfort, too. If we’re hiking, bring sneakers. If it’s chilly, bring a coat you can toss on between shots. Cozy couples are happy couples!

Make a Date Night Out of It

You’re already dressed up and glowing—why not celebrate? Plan dinner or drinks afterward and keep the fun going. Bonus: it’s a great way to reward a photo-shy partner.

Treat Yourself to Professional Hair and Makeup

If you’ve been considering doing your wedding hair and makeup trial, your engagement session is the perfect time. You’ll feel amazing and it’s a great test run before the big day.

Bonus Tip: Have Fun!

Your engagement session is just a practice round for your wedding portraits—it’s meant to be fun, relaxed, and a little romantic. The more you focus on enjoying the experience, the better your photos will turn out.
