One of the biggest things that my husband and I agreed on when we were planning our wedding was that we DIDN’T want a wedding cake. Neither one of us are big sweets people and we both aren’t huge fans of cake – plus we didn’t feel like it was *us* to have a gigantic expensive cake that we needed to have people watch us cut. So instead, we opted to have apple crisp with fresh homemade vanilla ice cream served, and it was absolutely perfect.
You don’t HAVE to have cake at your wedding if you don’t want to – a lot of brides tell me that their parents insist on them having a cake because it’s traditional but they (the bride) don’t want one. Don’t worry, there are approximately 298347 other options for a wedding dessert!! I’ve seen them all – mini cupcakes, chocolate covered strawberries, parfait shooters, brownies, donuts, pie – you name it!
Most bakers now offer more than cake because they know that brides today are shying away from the large cakes – but if that’s what you want, it’s your choice!! Your wedding is about YOU and your fiancé, and what makes you two YOU. If that means you’re going to have ice cream sandwiches or an ice cream truck, YOU DO YOU. And honestly? I see so much wedding cake that goes uneaten that’s if you feel like you don’t want to have it – don’t. You’re going to be saving money and waste, I promise.
And if you DO want to have a cake, go crazy with it. I don’t think I’ve ever photographed a regular vanilla or chocolate cake – I’ve seen Funfetti (which honestly kinda sounds like the best wedding cake ever), layers with caramelized fruit, and homemade jam fillings. Most of the times I see couples picking a different flavor and filling for each layer (which is exactly what I would do if I liked cake!). At the end of the day, your wedding is about YOU and your fiancé and your preferences!! Scroll on to find a few more examples of wedding desserts :).
