New Hampshire Family Photographer: A Summer Backyard Session

As a New Hampshire family photographer, one of my favorite things is photographing families right where they’re most comfortable. That was the case for this session – an easygoing morning at home with a family who showed up exactly as they are. No pressure, no expectations, and two kids with enough personality between them to carry the entire session.

The girls were full of energy, which always makes my job easier. Kids don’t need coaching; they need space to be themselves. And that’s exactly what we did. They explored, played, and checked in with mom and dad whenever they needed a quick reset. Some of my favorite images came from those unscripted moments – little glances, small gestures, and the kind of honesty you can’t manufacture.

Their matching outfits added just enough cohesion without feeling overly styled. The warm tones looked great against the greenery, and it kept the focus where it belonged: on the connection between them. Photographing families in New Hampshire means working with a lot of natural backdrops, and this one couldn’t have been better – simple, open, and familiar to the kids.

One thing I appreciated about this session was how comfortable mom and dad were letting the girls lead. We moved at the kids pace, which always results in photos that feel real! Between quick cuddles, a scrunched-up smile, or a moment of independence, this session reflected their family dynamic in a way that felt true to life.

Parents almost always tell me they “aren’t photo people,” but once the pressure is off and the kids have done their thing, they settle right in. These two were no exception—relaxed, happy, and clearly proud of the family they’ve built.

Sessions like this are exactly why I love working as a New Hampshire family photographer. Families don’t need a styled location or a perfect sunset. They just need the willingness to show up as themselves and let the moments unfold naturally!
