A Cozy At-Home Newborn & Family Session in California
I’ve probably said this every time I’ve photographed them, but I truly adore this session of my sister’s family—so much. It’s cozy, it’s chaotic, and it’s exactly the kind of beautiful imperfection that makes lifestyle sessions like this so special.
I was lucky enough to drive out to California and spend almost two months with them, soaking up time with her little crew and helping out with the nuggets. Their newest addition, baby Wes, is hands-down the chillest baby I’ve ever met. He handled the absolute circus that is a family session with a toddler and a dog like a total champ.
Why At-Home Newborn Sessions Just Make Sense
Between the wild two-year-old energy, a pup who definitely feels personally victimized by the presence of children, and the usual newborn needs (blowouts, feedings, outfit changes—you know the drill), doing this session at home was the best decision ever.
And honestly? I’ll say it forever: at-home newborn and family sessions are the way to go.
Here’s why:
-
You don’t have to pack up your entire house to leave
-
Kids are more comfortable in their own space
-
The photos end up being more natural, relaxed, and real
-
If someone needs a snack, a nap, or a moment, you’re already home
It’s not about perfection—it’s about presence. I want to capture the little moments: the bike rides in the backyard, the wrangling of tiny humans, the mid-morning snuggles, the post-bath baby yawns. These are the things you’ll miss most later on.
What We Did (and Why I Loved It)
This session had everything I love: real life, messy joy, and zero pressure to “pose.” We bathed baby Wes, played in the backyard, rode bikes, and just let the day unfold.
It was all so them, and that’s what makes these photos so powerful. Ten years from now, these images won’t just be pictures—they’ll be memories that feel like home.
